Facts to Know About Dog Bites

As we conclude National Dog Bite Prevention Week there are a few facts to know about dog bites – especially if you are a dog owner.  The two most important things to know as a dog owner are:

  • Any dog can be startled resulting in a dog bite injury regardless of the size or nature of the dog
  • You as a dog owner are strictly liable under California law for the financial consequences resulting from a bite or attack by your dog

Dog owners should carry substantial homeowners or renters insurance, which is the primary source of protection in the event their dog attacks or injures another party.

The first and most important thing to know as a dog bite victim is how to care for a dog bite woundInfection is one of the greatest risks in these cases, even though the old saying about “a dog’s mouth being cleaner than a human’s” might lead you to believe otherwise.  The saying is false, and dog bites can lead to infections resulting in serious consequences for the victim.  Dog bite wounds are often puncture or tearing wounds which result in damage to underlying ligaments and tendons while often resulting in substantial scarring.  It may be necessary to undergo several plastic surgeries to reduce the visibility of scarring.

We’ve also learned this week that most dog bite victims know the owner of the dog quite well as they are often family, close friends or neighbors.  Rivers Morrell has more than 40 years of experience in dog bite and personal injury cases.  He understands the importance of protecting underlying relationships while ensuring you and your family are fairly compensated for the medical bills and other costs associated with a dog bite or attack.  Almost half of dog bite victims with injuries are children.  Children often endure injuries to their face, torso and other visible areas and require counseling to help them to recover from the sudden and unexpected nature of a dog attack.

There are many facts to know about dog bites but the most important is to seek immediate medical treatment for a dog bite to prevent infection and to provide the greatest opportunity to heal.  If you, your child or someone you love has suffered injuries due to a dog bite we invite you to review the recommendations of our clients and the legal industry and contact us or call (949)305-1400 to speak with one of our experienced dog bite injury attorneys for a free consultation.
