Airline Near Miss for Orange County Residents Heading to John Wayne Airport

Two Southwest Airlines airplanes clipped each other’s wings while departing the gate in Oakland this evening.  One of the planes was heading to John Wayne Airport in Orange County when it collided with a neighboring plane while leaving the gate in Oakland.  The brush damaged a significant portion of the wing of the plane heading to John Wayne Airport.  Fortunately there were no injuries reported, but both planes had to be removed from service.

The recent record of flights into and out of John Wayne Airport in Orange County has been safe over the past few years, but this incident reminds us of the risk of flying.  Flying is statistically much safer than traveling in a car, truck, motorcycle or even as while out and about as a pedestrian here in Orange County, but accidents do happen.
