Seniors With Dementia are More Likely to Suffer a Nursing Home Injury

According to a recent article published by Neurology Advisor and drawing upon information published by the journal of the American Geriatrics Society, seniors with dementia are more likely to suffer a nursing home injury or fall.  How are Orange County, Anaheim and Mission Viejo nursing homes assessing the cognitive impairment of each resident and how are they applying the proper strategies to safeguard their patient’s safety.

The sad fact is the statistics in the study show they aren’t.  As a result, when a patient in a nursing home or skilled nursing facility falls and suffers an injury, the facility can be held accountable for personal injury and/or nursing home neglect.

The article focuses upon data regarding the correlation between cognition and the probabilities of injury.  When older adults and seniors in nursing homes showed signs of “low performance in attention and executive function” it tended to correlate with “gait slowing, instability, and future falls.”  In other words, the lack of careful supervision and care in skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes places a patient with difficulty walking or balancing at great risk for injury from a fall.

When levels of care and staffing do not meet federal and state mandated requirements, patients are often neglected.  A simple trip to the rest room can result in a serious injury or a wrongful death.

Seniors with dementia are more likely to suffer a nursing home injury or fall.  At the Law Firm of Rivers J Morrell we recognize not every fall or injury in a nursing home represents abuse or neglect.  However, falls resulting in injury are often the result of a failure to monitor, as well as nursing home abuse or neglect.
