CDC Reports Significant Rise in STD Transmission Cases

According to a recent study released by the Centers for Disease Control or CDC the US is experiencing a rapid increase in the number of Sexually Transmitted Disease or STD transmission cases in recent years.  Three dormant STD’s – chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis – have increased for the first year since 2006.  Herpes continues to be one of the most commonly transmitted STD, with genital Herpes Simplex Virus 1 or HSV-1 significantly increasing in the most recent study – especially in younger demographics.

However, the leading STD transmitted in the US continues to be Human Papillomavirus or HPV.  Although most forms of HPV are asymptomatic and resolve within a few years, two types – 16 and 18 – account for 70% of the cervical cancers throughout the world.  The impact of HPV transmission can become life threatening.  While there are vaccines available, they have not seen widespread adoption across American demographic profiles.  Of the 3,000 counties tracked nationwide by the CDC, Los Angeles County had the highest incidence of STDs.

If you receive an STD from an intimate partner without appropriate advance warning the impact on your life can be substantial.  Health risks associated with many diseases including cancer significantly increase in the presence of some STDs, and for others there is simply no cure.  The social impact can be quite traumatic, impacting everything from a person’s dating life to their self-esteem and sense of well-being.

Here in California it is a civil code violation for someone to knowingly expose a sexual partner to an STD such as HPV, Herpes, HIV/AIDS without warning and notification in advance of physical contact.  When this happens it is possible to hold a partner responsible in a civil (financial) action.  STD transmission such as Herpes, HPV or HIV from a person of substance such as a professional athlete, celebrity, actor or actress, business owner, college professor or simply a wealthy lover it is possible to hold them financially accountable for their actions.
